Elm Park ‘s Sports Capital & Equipment Programme (SCEP) grant application update

Dear Member,

Following on from the Tennis Club AGM and our commitment to members to provide an update on the SCEP application we present the following to you.

We acknowledge and are very grateful for all communications received from Members with excellent and timely advice.

Following the AGM a small Working Group was formed to progress the application for funding. The Working Group comprises Tim O’Brien, the General Manager of Elm Park Golf and Sports Club (EPG&SC),Brendan O'Connor (Mens Captain), Ronan Temple Lang (our rep on the Greens Committee), Adrian Duffy (member with engineering background and active tennis player) and Breda Keogh from the Finance Department of EPG&SC.

At the outset we should say this is a very competitive process with numerous other clubs also making similar grant applications. The time line is very tight and the application is a detailed process. Obviously, there is no guarantee of success, but we will work as hard as possible to submit a well costed, detailed application.

It is important to stress that the Application must be that of EPG&SC and must be made by and in the name of the parent club, EPG&SC. We are very grateful to Tim and Breda for coming on Board and have benefitted from their experience and expertise. The Management Board, whose consent is required, have fully supported the making of the application. We are grateful for the priority and commitment that EPG&SC have brought to the project.

The application process requires applicants to register an “interest in applying for a grant”. This initial process has been completed successfully. The detailed application must be submitted by 1st March 2021.

The Working Group has already consulted relevant people including an architect, the leaseholder, organisations who have been successful in receiving sports grants previously, past captains in Elm Park, our Course Director, a drainage expert and most importantly, Tennis Ireland.

We were asked at the AGM to consult with Tennis Ireland regarding surfaces. Tennis Ireland has recommended to EPG&SC that application be made for a Red Plus clay surface. This is a form of clay but, important to stress, is not the clay already laid on Courts 6 and 7. It is the surface which Fitzwilliam are switching to and which Naas and Sutton have successfully laid. Tennis Ireland advised of some of the known advantages of a Red Plus clay court as being advantageous for a slower playing surface when developing stroke play, longer rallies, and being kinder to the joints. The Application is required to be accompanied by a quotation for cost and the EPG&SC Working Goup believes that the club should retain the option to install what are considered to be superior courts to reflect our stature as one of Dublin’s premier clubs and accordingly have sourced a quotation for Red Plus to be used in our grant application.

The Working Group have been constantly reminded that a successful grant outcome cannot be guaranteed.

The call to convert courts 8 & 9 from grass to all weather courts originated from listening to members' concerns over access to courts.

An additional two all weather courts would tip the balance in favour of all weather courts in Elm Park to 5 grasscourts and 9 all weather courts (2 in the dome). This increase in all weather courts would result in substantial additional playing hours for members over the winter months. The front courts (6-9) could then be utilised for coaching.

It is important to stress that the matter is at a very preliminary stage with many turns in the road ahead. Successful applicant clubs will be notified in October and only then will the hard work commence.

We realise that members may have questions, concerns, suggestions and issues around the application. The Tennis Captains are willing to receive and respond to your further queries by email.

Sunniva and Brendan
